On this project, we had the privilege to work alongside the renowned architectural firm, Robert A.M. Stern Architects. We were commissioned to complete both the roofing and siding portions on this gorgeous custom home that sits beside the marshes of St. Simon’s Island.
Before the beginning of the installation, as many details as possible were hashed out between the crew and project management in office. The 8,800 sq. ft. roof design called 18” Perfections installed at the standard 5.5” exposure, with an additional design detail of every 7th row being triple stacked, giving the roof more dimension.
The crew began shingle installation in February 2024, with underlayment over plywood followed by a layer of AirCore™ Falcon breather fabric. They then began installing the 18” Western Red Cedar Perfections (sourced from Custom Shingles) with 316 stainless steel nails (from Myers Tool) and the triple stacked rows. All flashings, chimney valleys and drip edges were done with 16oz. lead coated copper.
Once the shingle installation was to begin, it was soon revealed that in spite of the varying slopes amongst the 30 different roof planes, all of the triple course lines were to line up at all junctures. The team went back to the drawing board to reach a solution and then worked with the crew onsite to implement the design.
With careful planning, eventually we were able to have every triple stacked row of the main field shingles to seamlessly align with a triple stacked row from the transitions all the way around the roof.
The synchronizing roof courses flowed into the siding which had its own creative challenges with varying insertions of custom cut shingles to grace the walls of the house. Stained 18” Perfections were used for the siding, along with wavy and diamond profiles all with different, intricate installation patterns, including framing some of the windows at an angle.
The crew wrapped up the roofing portion in April 2024 and the siding in August 2024. All the small details and planning came together on the exterior and resulted in a truly stunning roof and home overall.
