Custom Blended Ludowici Flat Clay Tile

Georgia Estate with Clay Tile Roof

This unique roof has a style all its own. The owner had a very specific vision for the roof, wanting an aged and rustic look, which ended up being a combination of metal roofing and a custom Ludowici clay tile.

Flat Clay Tile Roof Mockup

The project started back in 2022 working directly with Ludowici with multiple rounds of samples and mockups, with different color blends, styles, and warped features. After many samples, the perfect look was achieved with Ludowici’s Calais Shingle Tile in a blend of 40% Ebony Mist, 20% Slate Red, 20% Burgundy Red, and 20% Clay Red. Of these tile colors, 15% of them were to be hand warped - ⅓ to the right, ⅓ to the left, and ⅓ with a center warp.

The roofing crew arrived December of 2022 to start the dry-in process with Titanium PSU 30’s Ice & Water Shield. The crew then began the installation of the metal roofing portion first with Recla Metal’s Corrugated Antique Silver Metal panels in all of the lower pitched 3:12 sections of the roof. When the clay tiles’ production was complete, the crew began installing them section by section. Since it was such a custom blend, the shingles had to be carefully blended on site. Into this went many hours and mathematical equations to ensure a perfectly blended roof tiles in both color and warped profiles. The clay tiles were installed with ring shank stainless steel nails from Myers Tool to ensure longevity.

Flat Clay Tile Roof Install

The roof install itself went smoothly on the remaining steep-sloped 10:12 portions of the roof. To match the style of the roof, antique silver gutters were installed as well, along with a custom brass rain chain. The final result is truly stunning, perfectly capturing the rustic charm the owner envisioned.
